How to make your carbon rebate go even further

When I get money from the government, I usually deposit it in my bank account and forget about it. But one of the goals of the Carbon Tax Rebate is to give money back to Canadians so they can make more sustainable choices that will further lower their carbon footprint. This year, I’m putting my Carbon Tax Rebate money towards 1 or 2 items that save me money, while also reducing emissions! If you’re looking for ways to sustainably spend your Carbon Tax Rebate, check out the ideas below! (PS if you haven’t calculated your rebate yet…do it!)

It’s Smart to get a Smart Thermostat

Programmable thermostats cost $100-$300 but allow you greater control over the heating and cooling of your home. By turning down the temperature at night, and when no one is home during the day, you can save up to $114/year, while simultaneously lowering your carbon footprint by using less energy!

Vegetable Gardens are Great Value

Supplies to start your own veggies garden can cost around $200. While that seems like a lot of money, one eco-friendly blogger saved $200 in the summer months growing lettuce alone! Add some tomatoes, cucumber, and peppers into your garden and you’ll save so much more! Plus, you’re reducing your carbon footprint by ‘shopping’ local…in your own backyard. And backyard carrots taste incredible!

Buy a Bidet

Bidets cost anywhere from $70 to $200, but reduce toilet paper use by 50-75%. Which means that bidet users save up to 92$ US a year in toilet paper costs. By cutting down on paper products that are a) sourced from Canada’s Boreal Forest, and b) use tons of water to make (one roll of toilet paper requires 140 litres of water!), bidet users manage to save money, help the planet, and have extremely clean tushies.

Invest in an Energy-efficient Washing Machine

A new Energy Star washing machine costs around $1000. While your carbon tax rebate won’t cover the entire price in a single year, an energy-efficient washer can save you around $100/year on your water and energy bills. Plus, some cities, energy companies, or washing machine brands will offer you a rebate if you make the switch!
